A low pressure area has developed over the south-east Arabian Sea area and is very likely to concentrate into a depression and move northwestwards during subsequent 24 hours, the Meteorology Department warns.

It is also very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm subsequently and move northwestwards.

Naval and fishing communities are also requested to be vigilant in this regards, the department said issuing a heavy rain and strong wind advisory for sea areas.

The possibility for heavy showers or thundershowers and sudden roughness, associated with sudden increase of wind speed up to 70-80 kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Hambanthota via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Matara is high.

There is a possibility in the sea areas extending from Kalutara to Pottuvil via Galle and Hambantota may experience sea surges until the evening of 07th October 2018, due to the effect of swell waves, having 2.0-2.5 m height (This is not for land area).

The weather advisory said that the active clouds which were developed in the Western, South-Western and Southern sea area is active over the mentioned sea areas and are likely to persist during the next few hours.
