The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) says that a maximum retail price has been imposed on packeted and non-packeted white sugar with effect from midnight today (12).
Issuing a statement, the CAA said that the maximum retail price has been imposed through two Gazette notifications.
Accordingly a maximum retail price of Rs 100 per kilogram has been imposed on non-packeted white sugar while a MRP of Rs 105 per kilogram has been imposed on packeted white sugar.
At the same time importers are prohibited from selling or displaying for sale, white sugar at a price higher than Rs 92 per kg, the CAA said.
The statement added that the attention of the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Cost of Living had been directed towards the increase in price of white sugar and that measures were taken to reduce the price based on the report and recommendations of the study carried out by the CAA with that regard.
The CAA also warned that legal action will be taken against traders, distributers, suppliers as well as importers who sell, display for sale and supply for sale at prices above the gazette maximum retail prices.
