UPDATE: (5.24 p.m.) - Police fired tear gas to disperse protesting university students at Ward Place in Colombo.

Police earlier used water cannons in an attempt to disperse the student, however they had continued to protest in front of the UGC.

Ada Derana reporter said that the riot police proceeded to disperse the students using water cannons as they attempted to erect a hut in front of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Police had closed off Ward Place for traffic from near Town Hall due to the protest by university students.

Heavy traffic congestion has been reported in the area due to the demonstration by students of the South Eastern University.

The protest march was staged today (21), demanding solutions for the issues of the South Eastern University students.

Students of the Faculty of Technology of the Southeastern University of Sri Lanka (SEUSL) have completely taken over the administration building of the university and are currently engaged in a occupy protest within the building.

This was over the suspending of the studentship of four undergraduates and suspension of classes of 21 students.
