The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court was informed today that 123 out of 124 audio recordings of the phone conversations allegedly between Namal Kumara and former DIG Nalaka de Silva, being investigated in connection with the assassination plot, are a match with their voice samples.
The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) made this submission to the court based on the report of the Government Analyst’s Department, on the audio recordings provided by Namal Kumara, Operations Director of Anti-Corruption Movement and the voice samples obtained from both of them.
The case filed over the CID’s investigation into the alleged conspiracy to assassinate the President and former Defence Secretary was taken before Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne this morning (23).
Director (Operations) of Anti-Corruption Movement, Namal Kumara, had last month uncovered information of the conspiracy and the alleged conversations that he had with former DIG of the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) Nalaka de Silva regarding the matter and other controversial issues.
The CID subsequently commenced investigations regarding the alleged conspiracy and has recorded statements from both Namal Kumara and the former DIG on multiple occasions.
The Government Analyst’s Department had obtained voice samples from them both to see whether they were a match with the voices in the audio recordings provided to the CID by Namal Kumara.
The report compiled by the Government Analyst’s Department was recently presented to the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court by the CID.
Accordingly the CID had decided to seek international assistance in order to determine whether certain parts of the audio recordings have been edited or destroyed, as the technology available in the country was insufficient for this purpose.
However, the CID informed the magistrate today that 123 out of 124 audio recordings are a match with the voices of Namal Kumara and Nalaka de Silva.
Meanwhile the CID has also launched an investigation into a fake Facebook account created using former DIG Nalaka de Silva’s official laptop PC, which was ordered to be sent to the Government Analyst today by the magistrate.
The court also called for a report on two CDs handed over by Namal Kumara and submitted to the Government Analyst’s Department.
Meanwhile Nalaka de Silva had handed over a mobile phone and a CD to the CID during questioning. However, the questioning of the former DIG is being carried out today for the fourth consecutive day after which legal action will be instigated.
It is also said that the CID intends to continue interrogations under detention orders.
