The official term of the Northern Provincial Council (NPC), established for the first time following the end of the war in the country, will expire with effect from midnight tomorrow (24), says the Northern Province Governor’s Secretariat.

The first election of the NPC was held on 21st September 2013 while its first meeting was held on 25th October 2013 at the provincial council complex.

Out of the 38 members in the NPC; the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) secured 30 seats at the first election, while the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) secured seven and one seats, respectively.

Former Supreme Court Judge C.V. Wigneswaran was appointed the Chief Minister of the NPC, while the Tamil National Alliance managed to secure 78% of the votes in the province.

Following the termination of the official term of the NPC, it will be put under the authority of the current Northern Province Governor Reginald Cooray, according to the Governor’s Secretariat.
