Several delegates have called on Speaker Karu Jayasuriya at the Parliamentary premises this evening (31), stated Office of the Speaker, issuing a release.
Accordingly, UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka Hanaa Singer, Ambassador for the EU Tung-Lai Margue, British High Commissioner James Dauris, Canadian Ambassador David McKinnon and German Ambassador Jorn Rohde engaged in a special discussion with the Speaker on the current political situation in Sri Lanka.
The delegates had expressed their concern over the unexpected political transformation and pointed out the adverse consequences Sri Lanka may face due to this.
In response, the Speaker had informed them that he will be calling on President Maithripala Sirisena later this evening and that he hopes to arrive at a constitutional and democratic solution for the current situation soon.
Speaker Jayasuriya had further requested the delegates not to hasten into taking action –diplomatic or otherwise –against Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, a group of representatives from civil organizations also met with the Speaker and handed over an online petition urging to reestablish democracy by convening the parliament and requesting state officials no to follow any illegal orders. The petition had collected 16,000 signatures within 2 days.
