JVP’s support only to reconvene Parliament immediately - Vijitha

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says that it will only extend its support to immediately reconvene the Parliament and that it will not support either Ranil Wickremesinghe or Mahinda Rajapaksa.

JVP parliamentarian Vijitha Herath stated that an incorrect news report had been published on the website of a local newspaper claiming that the JVP is going to support Ranil Wickremesinghe.

“This news report is completely false. The JVP has neither said such a thing anywhere nor will it happen,” he emphasized.

He mentioned that the JVP had voted in favour of the motion of no confidence which had been brought against Ranil Wickremesinghe.

He stated that the JVP’s stance is that the President’s actions are unconstitutional, unethical and undemocratic and that they condemn these actions.

He said that the JVP demands that the President changes them and convenes Parliament to resolve the present crisis.

Herath said that Members of Parliament were summoned for a meeting today chaired by the Speaker and the JVP, which participated as a party, clearly stated the Parliament must be reconvened immediately.

“MP Mahinda Rajapaksa is talking about convening on November 5. What he says is not valid. To decide the convening, the President has to inform the Speaker in writing and issue the Gazette notification. Parliament can only be convened through a Gazette,” he said.

Herath further said that as per the Constitution, the President has to consult the Speaker before proroguing the Parliament, but the incumbent has done no such thing.

Therefore the appointing of Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister and the proroguing of Parliament are both wrong and Parliament should be convened immediately to resolve this issue, he stressed.
