Wildlife officers have managed to rescue two elephant calves that had fallen into a pit in Kalagama, Galkiriyagama, after a mission of nearly 3 hours, stated Ada Derana reporter.

The elephant calves had fallen into a well in private land in the area and the villagers had witnessed the 2 mother-elephants attempting to rescue them.

The residents had alerted the Galkiriyagama Wildlife officials who chased away the mother-elephants and rescued the calves using backhoe machines.

After the rescue, one elephant calf had left to the jungle with its mother. However, one calf attempted to stay back with the wildlife officers.

Subsequently, the villagers and wildlife officers guided it away into the jungle as the mother-elephant attempted to re-enter the village in search of her calf.
