The Attorney General has informed the President that the Private Member’s Motion presented to the Parliament seeking to abolish the death penalty is illegal. President mentioned this at an event held Diwulapitiya.

President Maithripala Sirisena says that drug racketeers, criminals, and rapists are the happiest before the challenges faced in the fight against drugs. He said he will not allow any room at any time to achieve their objectives.

“I saw in the newspaper this morning that 10 persons have died after moonshine poisoning. But I say it is okay. Why do they drink this filth? Can’t help if you died from drinking moonshine. Illegal liquor is all around the country. People dying from drinking moonshine is not a new occurrence”, he added.

President expressed these views addressing the concluding ceremony of the ‘Rata Wenuwen Ekata Sitimu’ program in Gampaha District, held at the Diwulapitiya Public Ground this morning (05).

He stated that several Ministers in the government are responsible for the environmental pollution in the Muthurajawela forest reserve.

The President said that some Ministers in the present government too, are involved in the environmental destruction in Muthurajawela which is a valuable asset of the Gampaha district.
