Term holidays come early; schools closed till April 20

March 12, 2020   02:37 pm

The first term holidays of all schools will commence from tomorrow (March 13), stated Minister of Education Dullas Alahapperuma.

The decision to move the term holiday forward has been taken as a measure to prevent parents of students from panicking over the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), stated the Minister at a press conference currently underway.

Accordingly, all schools in the island will be closed off until the 20th of April.

The decision was taken following a discussion held at the Ministry of Education earlier.

Minister Alahapperuma further said requested private schools and tuition classes to act with sensitivity as the Education Ministry cannot interfere with the holidays of those institutions.

The Ministry has further taken steps to temporarily suspend all educational tours and field trips.

The Sri Lankan infected with coronavirus had traveled to multiple tourist places in the country with a group of Italians; school children too may visit such places in educational tours, pointed out the Minister.
