EC has to follow established procedure on general election - AG

The Attorney General has informed the Election Commission of Sri Lanka that it has to follow the procedure established by the law for the conduct of Parliamentary Elections.

The Attorney General has passed his counsel as a response to advice sought by the Commission today, said the Coordinating Officer of the Attorney General.

In his request, Chairman of the Election Commission had sought advice from the Attorney General on whether a legal issue arises due to acceptance of nomination papers on March 17, 18 and 19 as March 16, 17, 18 and 19 which were within the nomination period had been declared as a special public holiday by two Gazette notifications.

In reply to the letter sent by the Chairman, the Attorney General stated that as nominations have been already been accepted by the NEC in respect of the 2020 Parliamentary Election, the commission had taken consequential steps to conduct such an election.

Therefore, the Attorney General emphasized that the Election Commission is required to following the procedure established by law for the conducting of Parliamentary Elections.
