The government has decided to suspend the proposed International Cricket Stadium project in Homagama, says the Prime Minister’s Office.
The decision has been reached following a special meeting held at the Temple Trees, chaired by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Sri Lankan Cricket giants, namely Roshan Mahanama, Sanath Jayasuriya, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Lasith Malinga and several others had attended the meeting.
They have tabled various proposals for the boost cricket locally, including former national team captain Mahela Jayawardene’s proposal for revamping school cricket.
Sri Lanka Cricket had previously stated that the establishment of this international cricket stadium was planned in view of the increasing demand for the game and especially due to the popularity of the short formats of the game. The national Cricket management group had said the need has arisen to cater to large crowds with easy access in an urban environment.
