The government’s proposal to appoint former Chief Justice Mohan Peiris as the new Sri Lankan Ambassador and Permeant Representative to the United Nations in New York has been approved by the Committee on High Posts.
Mr. Mohan Peris was called in to the Committee on High Posts held in Parliament today (03) under the patronage of the Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane, the Parliament’s Department of Communication said.
Ministers Dinesh Gunawardena, Johnston Fernando, Douglas Devananda, Keheliya Rambukwella and Members of Parliament Rishad Bathiudeen and Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka were also present at the meeting.
He will take over from Kshenuka Senewiratne, a senior official in the Sri Lanka Foreign Service who was appointed to the position in August last year. She had reportedly been recalled to the Ministry of External Affairs from October.
Mohan Peris will officially take charge after presenting his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
Last month, the Committee of High Posts of the Parliament had approved the name of senior journalist Mr. C.A. Chandraprema as the Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
