Minuwangoda-Peliyagoda Covid-19 cluster: 16 deaths within 2 weeks

A total of 383 new cases of coronavirus were identified in the country within yesterday while a majority of them are from the Colombo District (168) and Gampaha District (157).

The remaining Covid-19 patients are from Kalutara (24), Kegalle (06), Matara (05), Batticaloa (01) and Kurunegala (01) districts. 

Twenty-one (21) police officers are also among the infected persons detected yesterday.

Accordingly, the total number of positive cases from the Minuwangoda and Peliyagoda cluster has now increased to 9,096.

Health authorities state that 1,041 of them are employees of the Minuwangoda apparel factory and 1,007 are from the Peliyagoda Fish Market complex while 7,048 are close contacts from cluster.

According to the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA), a total of 16 coronavirus deaths are connected to this cluster and that these deaths were reported within a short period of just two weeks. 

The previous 13 Covid-19 deaths in the country were reported within a period of 06 months, GMOA’s Dr Haritha Aluthge said.

Sri Lanka’s tally of confirmed cases reported thus far has now increased to 12,570 with 6,623 recovering and 5,918 still being treats at hospitals. 

With the 05 Covid-19 deaths reported yesterday (05), the death toll due to the virus in the country has now reached 29.
