The daughter of a Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), who was arrested for causing property damage by crashing a luxury vehicle into a motor showroom at Cinnamon Garden in Colombo 07, has been granted bail.
The suspect, Roshani Madhusha Ratnayake, appeared before Colombo Magistrate’s Court when the case was taken up earlier today (18).
According to reports, she was released on two personal bails, each worth Rs 200,000.
Investigations have uncovered that the 19-year-old had not been in possession of a valid driving licence, officers of Cinnamon Garden Police told the court.
Appearing on behalf of the suspect, Attorney-at-Law Ajith Pathirana said his client, who is studying business administration at a private university, is still learning to obtain a driving licence.
He went on to point out that the motor crash was caused as his client accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of brakes while driving a vehicle belonging to one of her friends.
The defence wishes to negotiate with the proprietor and the vehicle owner to recompense them accordingly, he said further.
The lawyer who represented the motor showroom’s proprietor, told the court that the accident has caused his client heavy property damage accumulating to nearly Rs 20 million.
The owner of the vehicle in question also informed the court that he had to suffer a loss of nearly Rs 35 million owing to the accident.
Taking the submissions into consideration, Colombo Additional Magistrate Hiroshi Kahingala ordered to release the suspect on two personal bails and to take up the case again on the 2nd of March.
