Education Minister responds to concerns on reopening schools

November 20, 2020   02:44 pm

The government decided to reopen schools after taking into account the recommendations of the health authorities, says Minister of Education Prof. G.L. Peiris.

It was announced yesterday that schools, except those in Western Province and locked-down areas, will be reopened for Grades 6 and above from the 23rd of November as previously scheduled.

The minister’s remarks came during the second reading debate of Budget 2021 which commenced this morning (20) for the third consecutive day.

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Chaminda Wijesiri, during the parliamentary session, pointed out that reopening schools amidst the Covid-19 outbreak puts the future of the country at risk.

In response, the Education Minister explained that the decision was not arbitrarily taken. “We have spoken to principals, senior teachers and health experts on the matter. We reached the decision after taking all their views into consideration.”

However, MP Wijesiri went on to question if the children would have to take responsibility in the event of a coronavirus wave at schools following the reopening. Minister Peiris responded that the children will not be held responsible under any circumstances.

He noted that the government reached a balanced decision after considering all relevant factors on providing education for children while ensuring their health and safety.
