Escaped Mahara inmate recaptured in Orugodawatte

The Mahara Prison inmate who had escaped while receiving treatment at the Ragama Hospital has been recaptured by prison authorities.

An inmate, who was under medical care at the Colombo North Teaching Hospital in Ragama after sustaining injuries in the Mahara Prison riot escaped last night (02).

The escaped inmate has been taken into custody by prison intelligence officers at the Orugodawatta area.

The detainee in question has been detained separately at the Welikada Prison, Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said.

Eleven inmates in total died in the incident while 106 others and two prison officials were wounded. Twenty-eight of the injured are still receiving treatment at the Ragama Hospital.
