Fourteen dead, dozens injured after bus falls down precipice

(UPDATED) Fourteen people have died after a bus fell down a precipice at Passara this morning (March 20), according to hospital sources.

Reports revealed that 32 other passengers sustained injuries in the fatal accident.

They have been admitted to the hospitals in Passara and Badulla for treatment. According to hospital sources, some of them are in critical condition.

Ada Derana correspondent said 29 injured passengers are under medical care at Badulla General Hospital while three others are at the Passara Hospital.

According to the police, the fatal incident took place at around 7.15 am today, at the 13th-milepost in Passara on Monaragala-Badulla road.

Reportedly, the remains of 14 victims are currently placed at the Passara Hospital.

A Colombo-bound bus, which departed from Lunugala, fell nearly 200 feet down a precipice, as its driver swerved to avoid a lorry which arrived from the opposite direction at a narrow pass.

Passara Police is conducting further investigations into the incident.
