Minister Mahinda Amaraweera laid the foundation stone for a new railway station in Nakulugamuwa on the Matara-Beliatta railway line.
Accordingly, the project for a new railway station worth Rs 08 million was launched yesterday (01).
The Minister instructed the Department of Railways to complete the construction of the new station by the end of the year.
Addressing the event, Minister Amaraweera said, the current government has understood that strengthening the public transport system will help reduce the traffic congestion in suburban areas.
However, if the public is to be persuaded to use public transport instead of private vehicles, people’s confidence in public transport must be confirmed, he added.
Stating that it is currently estimated that one train can carry the total number of passengers carried by 30 buses, Amaraweera said that, modernizing the railway service is the best solution to reduce traffic congestion.
The current government has paid its attention to this matter, he further said.
