Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has informed UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe that he is willing to resign from his position as UNP General Secretary, for the unity of the party.
Kariyawasam revealed this while speaking to media following the Working Committee meeting of the United National Party (UNP) held this evening.
Former MP Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, acting as a mediator, yesterday held discussion with the ‘Samagi Jana Balawegaya’ led by Sajith Premadasa and the United National Party in order to find a solution the issue between both factions.
During this discussion, the Sajith faction had asked Senaratne to inform Ranil’s faction that it is imperative that both sides should reach a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
Accordingly the Working Committee of the UNP met today (4) under the leadership of former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in order to decide on the proposals for the agreement.
However, Mr Premadasa had not attended today’s working committee meeting. At the previous working committee meeting he had proposed that the Samagi jana Balawegaya should contest under the symbol of the ‘telephone’, which was the symbol of ‘Ape Jathika Peramuna’ (Our National Front).
