Glenn Maxwell, one of Australia’s most dynamic and unforgettable one-day players, has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals, bringing an end to a 13-year ODI career.

Maxwell made his debut in 2012 and went on to play 149 ODIs, scoring nearly 4,000 runs. Speaking on The Final Wordpodcast, the two-time ODI World Cup winner reflected on his decision:

“I said to him right then and there, ‘I don’t think I’m going to make that’,” he recalled.

Maxwell acknowledged it was time to make way for the next generation:

“I think it’s time to start planning for people in my position—to give someone else a crack and a chance to make that spot their own ahead of the 2027 World Cup. Hopefully, they get enough of a lead-in to really succeed in that role.”
