Irish cricket has been handed a boost with the news that both Sri Lanka and Pakistan will play ODI series against Ireland next summer.

Sri Lanka will visit for two ODI’s in June, while Pakistan will tour in August, also playing two ODI’s.

“It’s fantastic news and exactly the type of fixtures we’ve been crying out for,” said Ireland captain William Porterfield.

“Pakistan have been regular visitors to Ireland in recent years, and we’ve enjoyed some great tussles against them.

“Sri Lanka have also been in Dublin recently and we look forward to playing them again. We want to be playing regularly against top sides and these fixtures are a very welcome first step.

“We’re taking on the World Champions Australia in Belfast this week, and these fixture announcements have given everyone a real lift ahead of the clash. The players relish these opportunities to take on the top sides, but we will only continue to improve if they become a regular feature.”

Ireland’s most recent meeting with Pakistan came during the World Cup in Adelaide, when they lost by seven wickets despite a brilliant 107 from skipper William Porterfield.

On their last visit to Ireland in May 2013, a Paul Stirling century and an unbeaten 84 from Kevin O’Brien saw Ireland claim a dramatic tie in the first game. Ireland looked on course to win the second game after Ed Joyce scored 116 not out as they posted 229, but Pakistan recovered from 133 for 7 to win by two wickets.

Sri Lanka visited Ireland last year, when they won the first ODI by 79 runs, while the second game was abandoned.

The games against Sri Lanka will take place on Thursday June 16 and Saturday June 18, while the fixtures against Pakistan are on Thursday August 18 and Saturday August 20 - the venues for all the games are still to be confirmed.
