Angelo Mathews has been appointed as Sri Lanka’s stand-in captain for the upcoming T20I series in the West Indies. Mathews steps in for Dasun Shanaka whose travel plans stand delayed owing to US transit visa issues.

Shanaka was newly appointed the captain for the series but was unable to travel with the team to Caribbean. He is expected to join once the visa issues are resolved.

“Shanaka confronted this issue pursuant to the loss of his passport, which had a valid visa for the USA stamped on it,” the board said in a release earlier this week. “Sri Lanka Cricket is working closely with the relevant authorities to get the visa issue of Shanaka sorted, quickly as possible. He is expected to join the team once the issue is resolved.”

It’s been a tumultuous start to the tour for Sri Lanka. They will be without Lahiru Kumara who returned a positive COVID-19 test before departure and had to be replaced by Suranga Lakmal.

The first T20I is on March 3. The teams also play three ODIs and two Tests. All the matches will be at two venues in Antigua.
