Spinner Glenn Maxwell bowled Martin Guptill with his second delivery as New Zealand lost both their openers in the first 12 overs of the World Cup final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday.

Guptill, who made a World Cup record score of 237 not out against the West Indies in the quarter-finals and is the tournament’s leading scorer, was beaten by Maxwell’s turn to be out for 15 leaving the Black Caps a shaky 33 for two in the 12th over.

Mitchell Starc gave the Aussies a flying start removing the dangerous Brendon McCullum for a duck in his opening over.
