The South-West monsoon is gradually establishing over the island, bringing showers and strong winds to several parts of the country, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Accordingly, showers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts today (21). Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely in some of these areas, the Met. Department noted.

Several spells of showers are also forecast for the Northern Province and the Anuradhapura District.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m.

The Met. Department further stated that fairly strong winds of 30–40 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Southern provinces.

The general public has been to take necessary precautions to reduce damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The general public has been requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

A warning has been issued by the Department of Meteorology for rough sea conditions and strong winds over the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea regions over the next three days.

According to the Met. Department, wind speeds are expected to reach 40–50 km/h and may temporarily increase up to 60 km/h, making sea areas rough at times.

In its marine forecast for the next 24 hours, the Department said showers or thundershowers are likely at several locations in sea areas off the coast from Puttalam to Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

Scattered showers or thundershowers are expected during the evening or night in other parts of the island.

Winds over sea areas will blow from the southwest at speeds of 30–40 km/h, while wind speeds may temporarily increase up to 50–60 km/h in sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Kankesanthurai, Mannar, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle, Hambantota and Pottuvil.

Meanwhile, the general weather forecast issued at 4.00 p.m. today (19) states that the southwest monsoon is gradually establishing across the country.

Showers or thundershowers are expected at intervals in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North Western provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts. Heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is possible in some areas, the Met. Department said.

Several spells of rain are also expected in the Northern Province, as well as in Anuradhapura and Hambantota districts.

Isolated afternoon showers or thundershowers may occur in parts of the Uva Province and in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts after 2.00 p.m.

Fairly strong winds about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over Western slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Hambantota district. 

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The Department of Irrigation says a decrease in rainfall was observed yesterday (16) in areas surrounding the Kalu, Kelani, and Attanagalu Oya river basins.

According to the department, the Kalu River basin received between 50 and 75 millimetres of rainfall, marking the highest rainfall recorded among the river basins during the day.

Several areas surrounding the Attanagalu Oya and Kelani River also recorded rainfall between 60 and 70 millimetres, the department stated.

However, less than 25 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in the remaining river basins.

Meanwhile, the Department of Irrigation emphasized that the water level in the Attanagalu Oya remains high, although it has now receded to warning level.

It further noted that the water level in the Kuda Ganga is currently at a minor flood condition.
