Nine Lankan passengers busted with gold chains worth over Rs 20mn

Nine Sri Lankan passengers were arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for illegally bringing in 4kg of gold concealed as chains, Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.
The group was taken into custody at around 2.30 am this morning (03) by the officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) attached to the BIA.
The suspects, who had arrived in the country from Bangkok, Thailand, were identified as residents of Yakkala, Nittambuwa, Gampaha and Kirindiwela areas.
The contraband worth over Rs 20 million has been handed over to the Customs for further investigations, the police said.
The CID unit at the Katunayake Airport and Sri Lanka Customs are jointly probing the incident.
