August 28, 2018
The mahout of the tusker ‘Kalana’ of Sri Vishnu Devala in Devinuwara and the Secretary of Basnayake Nilame were arrested on the complaint lodged at the Gandara Police by Deputy Minister of Wildlife and Regional Development Palitha Thewarapperuma, stating that the guardians of the said elephant have not been treating it properly.
Following a revelation by Derana Aruna on the tusker’s suffering due to months-old wound on its front leg, Deputy Minister, along with several wildlife officers, visited the tusker on 27th August.
Thewarpperuma had inquired the Secretary of Basnayake Nilame, S. Kowalage on the tusker before proceeding to lodge a complaint at the Gandara Police Station.
Tusker Kalana had been tied up by iron chains for 3 years now and the freedom of the elephant has been completely violated, Deputy Minister pointed out.
Accordingly, the arrested persons were produced at the Matara Magistrate’s Court today (28).
