Derailment disrupts train services on up-country line

An observation compartment of a passenger and freight train travelling from Badulla to Kandy has derailed.

Train services along the up-country railway line have been disrupted owing to the derailment of the observation compartment of the ‘1596’ passenger and freight train plying from Badulla to Kandy, the Badulla railway control room said.

The derailment had reportedly occurred at around 12.30 p.m. this afternoon (24).

The train’s observation compartment had derailed between the Ella and Demodara railway stations.

The Railway Control Room further said that the railway track has been severely damaged due to the train derailment while the work related to restoring the derailed train is currently being carried out.
