Police raid illegal firearms workshop in Matara; 3 arrested with revolvers

Police officers have raided a workshop where revolver-type firearms were being manufactured and arrested a suspect in the Palatuwa area in the Matara police division.

The operation was carried out based on a tip-off received by the officers of the Matara Division Crimes Bureau.

During the raid, a 63-year-old resident from the Malimbada area in Palatuwa was apprehended with a locally-manufactured firearm, five rounds of 9mm ammunition, a welding plant and other equipment used in manufacturing firearms. 

Following the interrogation of the suspect, it has been revealed that 02 similar firearms have already been sold.

Later, officers from the Matara Division Crimes Bureau had arrested two additional suspects, in the Ahangama police division, who were found in possession of the two sold firearms in question.

The arrested suspects are aged 47 and 54 while they are both residents of the Ahangama area.

The suspects and the seized firearms have been handed over to Matara Police.

Matara Division Crimes Bureau is conducting further investigations into the incident.
