Big & Green Arpico Supercentre at Wattala

Arpico Supercentre, Sri Lanka’s premier retail chain that was re-launched recently with a unique brand proposition “Fresh Ideas Everyday” increased its foot print in the island with the launch of Sri Lanka’s first and most eco-friendly Supercentre in the bustling town of Wattala.

The new Arpico Supercentre in Wattala adds another 50,000 square feet of high quality shopping and offer its shoppers unbeatable choice and value with over 45,000 quality products on display falling into the main categories of grocery, fresh fruits, vegetables, pharmaceuticals, household items, linen, electronics, toys, baby items, giftware, furniture, clothing, hardware and much more all in one single floor that would inspire the shopper to try something new and innovative making their shopping an enjoyable experience.

Located in a busy area of the main town at a location which has ample parking space and offers it’s shoppers an on-site Kids play area and a Coffee Shop offering gourmet coffee and fresh bakery products.

Mr. Andrew Dalby, CEO Arpico (Richard Pieris Distributors Ltd;) said, “This is an exciting time to be in business.  Peace in Sri Lanka has generated a sense of optimism in the country which in turn has increased consumer confidence, therefore it is the right time for Arpico to increase its footprint in the Islandand we have chosen Wattala to launch our most eco-friendly store that will redefine their shopping experience.”

He further stated that “As responsible citizens and businesses, we believe that it is our duty and obligation to work towards safeguarding the environment. We are glad to have this opportunity to lead the charge on reducing the use of plastics that contribute greatly to the pollution of the environment, as an incentive to shoppers contributing towards the green initiative Arpico Supercentre will be rewarding shoppers who bring their own bags with privilege green points that can be redeemed against future purchases”.

Arpico Supercentre Wattala, incorporates a number of environmentally responsible features including Prismatic Lighting combined with enhanced use of natural daylight using translucent cladding and sun pipes in the roof. Prismatic Lighting minimizes the use of grid electricity thereby bringing down the cost of electricity drastically.

The store also employs a Rain Water Harvesting System where rain water is collected in a catchment area on the roof, then purified and conveyed to water the lawn and garden and for toilet flush. This will reduce the load on the national water supply system.

The sewage system is designed in a fashion that waste is recycled as fertilizer and the water treated and released. Thus the Supercentre waste disposal will be substantially reduced by source-separation of recyclable and compostable materials while reducing pressure for incineration or landfill.

“Understanding customers’ need, we are giving them a viable and an attractive alternative in the form of reusable and eco-friendly bags that will suit their shopping needs. They also have the option of purchasing paper bags instead. We are confident that our shoppers will join us in this effort to protect our environment by using these bags everytime they shop, we have also introduced an eco-privilege card made of corn starch which is 100% bio-degradable” said Ms. Avanthi De Zoysa, Marketing Manager, Aprico Supercentre.

Adding further value is the Green House in the Supercentre that will sell many different herbs, popular vegetables and flower plants. The Supercentre will also market the necessary gardening tools, seeds, manure and also provide advice on maintenance.

Ms. De Zoysa further stated that “We changed the retail landscape in Sri Lankaa decade ago by introducing our first large format supercentre to the Sri Lankan shopper looking for quality, value, convenience, service and choice. The modern day shopper is more innovative and willing to try out new products and services. Therefore, as Arpico Supercentre is committed towards providing “Fresh Ideas Everyday” we continuously identify the emerging needs of our shoppers and satisfy their needs by offering greater choice and value.”

The new Arpico Supercentre in Wattala is the most eco-friendly Supercentre in Sri Lanka and Arpico Supercentre plans to introduce these eco-friendly features to the other Supercentres in the near future.

The new Arpico Supercentre in Wattala was ceremonially declared open by Dr. Sena Yaddehige, Chairman/CEO of Richard Pieris & Company PLC recently in the presence of a large and distinguished gathering that included the Management and the Board of Directors, distinguish invitees from leading companies and the residents in an around the Wattala area and the Media.
