A pistol type firearm has been discovered within the Mount Lavinia court premises.

One individual has been arrested in connection with the incident, and it has been revealed that he is a prison inmate.

At the request of the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court, three inmates had been brought today (29) to clean the court’s storage area as part of community service work.

While cleaning the storage area where case-related items are kept, one of the inmates had found a 9mm firearm and taken it with him onto the prison bus.

The prison bus then left the court premises to return to the prison.

Inside the bus, the inmate who had taken the pistol was seated behind another prisoner who had been produced before court for a hearing today.

The prison officers on the bus noticed that the inmate had a suspicious parcel in his possession.

Upon inspection, they discovered the firearm inside the parcel.

The prison bus was then brought back to the court, and court police officers were immediately informed about the incident.
