66 bags of sea cucumber found buried in Kalpitiya

Police have recovered 66 gunny bags of sea cucumber buried in the ground close to an IDP camp in Kalpitiya. Police have also arrested one individual in connection to concealing the large quantity sea cucumber, which is an endangered species.
Possession or poaching of sea cucumbers is prohibited under the Fisheries Act and also under international law.
While the exact value of the discovery is yet to be estimated, Kalpitiya Police state that sea cucumbers found packed in 66 gunny bags had been prepared to be transported to another location.
Sea cucumbers are in demand from South East Asian countries where it is used in preparing traditional medicines besides as a delicacy.
