Corex-D banned in Sri Lanka

October 9, 2012   04:08 pm

The sale and distribution of the cough syrup Corex-D has been banned with immediate effect pending an investigation, the Ministry of Health said today.

The cough syrup, often used as an intoxicant by youth and students, was banned following the death of six persons within a period of 2 weeks due to illegal use without a doctor’s prescription, the Ministry said.

Another person is said to be currently receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital due to an overdose of the syrup.

The Health Ministry further says that certain private pharmacies issue Corex-D without a prescription.
