Rangana Herath completed a second successive five-wicket haul on Monday (November 19) to strengthen Sri Lanka’s hopes of victory in the opening Test against New Zealand in Galle.
New Zealand collapsed to 118 all out in their second innings just after lunch on the third day after failing to cope with Herath’s left-arm spin.
New Zealand, trailing by 26 on first innings, were just 92 runs after losing seven wickets in the morning session for 61 runs on resuming at 35 for 1. Herath finished with 6 for 43 off 18 overs to go with 5 for 65 in the first.
Nuwan Kulasekara, the medium-pacer, did the early damage with two wickets in his opening three overs before Herath, who took one wicket on Sunday, struck four times in five overs to have New Zealand reeling at 79 for 7.
Herath was on a hat-trick when he bowled Daniel Flynn (20) and then trapped Doug Bracewell leg-before. He started the slide when he had Ross Taylor leg before for 18 before accounting for James Franklin (2) for his first two wickets.
Kulasekara struck in his second over of the morning when he bowled Martin Guptill, the opener, before dismissing Williamson, caught down the leg-side by a diving Prasanna Jayawardene.
Guptill fell for his overnight score of 13, while Williamson (10) added just one run in the morning.
Sri Lanka were bowled out for 247 in their first innings on Sunday in reply to New Zealand’s 221, with Mahela Jayawardene scoring 91 and Angelo Mathews 79. Tim Southee, the paceman, took four wickets and Jeetan Patel, the offspinner, three for New Zealand. - AFP
