BASL vice president to resign

Attorney-at-law Anoma Gunathilake today said she has decided to resign from her post as Vice President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL).
The decision comes in the wake of three resolutions being passed that association’s General Meeting today, regarding the impeachment of the Chief Justice.
Anoma Gunathilake, a former Assistant Secretary of the BASL and former President of the Colombo Law Society, speaking to Ada Derana stated that the cause for the resignation was due to the resolutions not being passed in a proper manner.
However, it is said that President of the BASL Wijedasa Rajapaksa has not received a letter of resignations from the Vice President.
The Bar Association had passed the resolutions with a show of hands instead of moving to conduct a ballot, which had reportedly angered several of its members.
Ada Derana leant that some of the senior lawyers were confused about the outcome of the proceedings as there was no vote taken.
Furthermore, a tense situation had erupted during the proceedings which was soon brought under control.
The special general meeting was held at the Colombo District Court premises today (15) where ideas for and against the resolutions were brought forward by the Bar Association members.
One of the resolutions stated that the BASL will not welcome a newly appointed Chief Justice if the incumbent Chief Justice is removed without an opportunity to have a fair trial.
