Suhada Gamlath, De Almeida Guneratne sworn in as judges in Fiji

Justice Suhada K. Gamlath and Justice De Almeida J. Guneratne were today sworn in as new judges for the Fiji Court of Appeal before the President of Fiji, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, during a ceremony at the Government House.

The judges from Sri Lanka took the oath of office in the presence of the Chief Justice Anthony Gates, President of the Fiji Court of Appeal, Justice William Calanchini, the Resident Court of Appeal Judge, Justice Suresh Chandra and the Chief Registrar of the High Court,  Yohan Liyanage.

Justice Gamlath studied law at Sri Lanka Law College from 1978 to 1980 and continued with LLM (Masters of Law) from Aberdeen University, United Kingdom.

Having practised law for the past 30 years, he started his career as a State Counsel of the Attorney General’s Department in Sri Lanka for six years and progressed to be Additional Solicitor General in charge of the Criminal Division before taking up the position in Fiji.

Judge Guneratne graduated with LLM in 1984 and attained Attorney-at-Law in 1977 together with completing his LLB in 1975 in Sri Lanka. In 1997, Judge Guneratne graduated with a Ph.D from Hawaii.

Among Justice Guneratne’s notable achievement include being Legal Consultant to the Law and Society Trust of Sri Lanka and the Asian Human Rights Commission based in Hong Kong.

Their term is for a period of three years effective from today, Fijian media reported.
