Protest against deportation of Sri Lankan Tamils in Malaysia

June 4, 2014   04:39 pm

About 30 representatives of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Malaysia, led by Suaram, protested at the police headquarters in Bukit Aman against the deportation of three Sri Lankan Tamil refugees.

Two of the three have United Nations High Commission on Refugee (UNHCR) status while the other’s asylum request is still pending.

At 11.30am, representatives of Suaram and the NGOs marched to the police headquarters to protest against the action taken against the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees.

“This protest is to send in a memorandum to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar,” said Suaram chairman K. Arumugam.

The NGOs involved in the protest are Refugee Support Group, Coalition of Malaysian Indian NGOs, Malaysian Dravadian Association and Group of Concerned Citizens.

“Twenty policemen waited at the entrance of the police headquarters while a public relations department officer received the memorandum,” said Arumugam.

The memorandum criticised Khalid’ for saying that some refugees are regrouping the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Malaysia and disrespecting the international law, FMT reports.
