Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe today accused the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Sri Lankan government of banding together to carry out cutbacks on allocations for various sectors and claimed that the pensions funds are being targeted next.
“The formula for calculating pensions has been cancelled out by the IMF formula,” he said, adding that today large scale budget cuts are being carried out with ulterior motives.
He alleged that the IMF knows that the government is stealing and engaging in corruption.
Speaking at a press conference in Colombo, the UNP leader stated that the international organisation has joined up with the Rajapaksa regime and is therefore allowing these malpractices, but pointed out that the innocent masses are suffering by this.
He stated that the IMF and government are now targeting the pension funds and that it will be the next state expenditure to suffer from cutbacks. “Pension fund is one portion of the IMF cutbacks, the others are health and education,” he said.
The agreement with the IMF should be terminated, he said, adding, that a UNP government would tear it up.
