A 54-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Thambuluwa area in Polpithigama, this afternoon (23).

Ada Derana reporter said that the elephant attacked the woman soon after it was rescued by a group of people, which was trapped in a well.

The elephant had been rescued by some officials attached to the Polpithigama Pradeshiya Sabha and Polpithigama police.

“The woman has reportedly come to the location to see the elephant being rescued by the officers. However, the wild jumbo had attacked the victim soon after it came out of the well, and fled to the jungle,” the reporter added.

The deceased has been identified as mother to three children and a resident of the same area. The remains of her body has been sent to the Polpithigama Base hospital for autopsy.
