In a new turn of events into the night club brawl in Duplication Road, the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) today apprehended six more suspects in connection with the incident including two Ministerial Security Division (MSD) officials attached to Minister Mervyn Silva.
A senior police officer told Ada Derana that the suspects were arrested based on statements given by the foreign couple and the surveillance video camera footage at the crime scene.
The suspects will be produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, today.
Minister Mervyn Silva’s son Malaka Silva, who has come to the spotlight yet again with the controversial assaulting incident of foreign couple, has been remanded until 18 November.
The CCD arrested Malaka on 1 November following a complaint lodged by the foreign nationals.
The incident had taken place at around 3.00 a.m. at the nightclub, when the minister’s son had allegedly harassed a foreign woman, thereby provoking her partner who had then attempted to assault Malaka.
However, in response Malaka Silva’s security personnel had assaulted the tourist while both parties subsequently filed complaints over the incident, according to the police.
Malaka, the son of Public Relations and Public Affairs Minister Mervyn Silva, has been involved in several similar assault incidents in the past while in July last year he was hospitalised following an attack at the car park of a popular clothing store in Town Hall, Colombo.
On another occasion, Malaka Silva, was wanted in a case where he is alleged to have assaulted an Army Major in September, 2012.
