The Colombo Magistrate’s Court today further remanded seven suspects including Minister Mervyn Silva’s son Malaka Silva who were arrested on charges of assaulting a foreign couple at a night club in Colombo.
Malaka, four of his friends and two Ministerial Security Division (MSD) officials attached to his father were ordered remanded until November 25 by Colombo Additional Magistrate Mohammed Sahabdeen.
An identification parade was scheduled to be held today, however the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) informed court that the plaintiffs were not present as one of them has been admitted to hospital due to an illness.
Postponing the case to November 25, the magistrate instructed for the foreign couple to appear in the court on the said date and to cancel the identification parade if they fail to do so.
The Colombo Crime Division (CCD) yesterday apprehended six more suspects in connection with the incident including two Ministerial Security Division (MSD) officials attached to Minister Mervyn Silva.
A senior police officer told Ada Derana that the suspects were arrested based on statements given by the foreign couple and the surveillance video camera footage at the crime scene.
The CCD arrested Malaka on 1 November following a complaint lodged by the foreign nationals.
The incident had taken place at around 3.00 a.m. at the nightclub, when the minister’s son had allegedly harassed a foreign woman, thereby provoking her partner who had then attempted to assault Malaka.
However, in response Malaka Silva’s security personnel had assaulted the tourist while both parties subsequently filed complaints over the incident, according to the police.
Malaka, the son of Public Relations and Public Affairs Minister Mervyn Silva, has been involved in several similar assault incidents in the past while in July last year he was hospitalised following an attack at the car park of a popular clothing store in Town Hall, Colombo.
On another occasion, Malaka Silva, was wanted in a case where he is alleged to have assaulted an Army Major in September, 2012.
