There is a suspicion that a conspiracy has been launched to assassinate former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, says the People’s Media Organisation.

The group’s National Organiser, Nimal Weeratunga, stated that on June 09 they complained to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) regarding the matter and that they were notified the complaint has been forwarded to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

Speaking at a press conference in Colombo today, Mr Weeratunga said that he too provided a statement over the complaint.

He stated that presently false accusation are being indirectly hurled at Mahinda Rajapaksa to portray him as a murderer and that certain websites had quoted MP Ranjan Ramanayake making such allegations.

Weeratunga stated that they intend to compile a special report regarding the threat to Mahinda Rajapaksa’s life and that it will made available to the President, Defence Secretary, IGP and the public.

Attorney-At-Law Sisira Jayakody, who also spoke at the press event, said that it had been reported recently that 300 former LTTE cadres are expected to be released and reintegrated into society.

He stated that this too poses a threat to the life of the former President as well as to the general public.
