Four soldiers sentenced in Vishvamadu rape case

The Jaffna High Court today sentenced four Sri Lankan soldiers to 25 years in prison for raping a women and sexually abusing another in Vishvamadu, Mullaitivu in 2010.

High Court judge M. Ilancheliyan ordered the convicted soldiers to pay a compensation of Rs 500,000 to one victim and Rs 100,000 to the other woman.

The soldiers, then attached to the Vishvamadu army camp, were charged with raping a 27-year-old mother of two and sexually abusing a 37-year-old mother of five on June 6, 2010.

Three of the four soldiers were present in the court today, while the fourth one was tried in absentia as he had evaded arrest.

The judge said that if the soldiers failed to pay compensation to the victims, they would have to undergo five more years in prison.
