The Principal of Kingswood College in Kandy has been interdicted for collecting money violating regulations, the Ministry of Education said.
A statement issued today states that an audit carried out, as per the instructions of the Education Secretary, has uncovered that the school’s principal had collected a sum of Rs 3,625,000 which is a violation of the circular issued by the ministry.
The inquiry also reveals that the principal had collected the money from parents enrolling Grade 1 students for the year 2016, by saying it was for the construction of a new building in the school.
According to the ministry, a sum of Rs 50,000 each had been collected from 65 individuals, another was asked to pay Rs 75,000 while two others had made payments of Rs 150,000 each.
This was done despite the fact that a decision had been reached to provide Rs 70 million to the school thorough the Education Ministry for the constructing of a four-storey building.
The ministry says that collecting money from parents in such a manner for an office building not included in the school’s budget estimates for the year 2016 is a violation of 4 circulars issued by the ministry.
