Fmr. Embilipitiya ASP arrested by CID

The former ASP of Embilipitiya Police, D.W.C. Dharmaratne, has been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in connection with the recent death of a youth during a clash with police in Embilipitiya, sources told Ada Derana.

The Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) was summoned by the CID to record a statement this morning and was reportedly arrested afterwards.

On January 27, the Embilipitiya Magistrate instructed the CID to arrest the suspects including the former Embilipitiya ASP and the Headquarters Inspector (HQI), S.R.J. Dias, in connection with the incident.

The ASP and the HQI were ordered to be arrested and produced before the court while the other suspects were ordered to be produced in an identification parade.

However, no arrests were made despite several days passing since the court order. The police spokesman had said that the police officers cannot be arrested without instructions from the Attorney General.

Four policemen and three civilians were hospitalised with injuries following the clash at a residence on Nawa Nagara Road in Embilipitiya on January 04 while one of the latter succumbed to injuries just days later.

Family member of the deceased claim he was beaten and pushed off the top floor of a building while the police spokesman had stated that he had jumped.

Villagers also alleged that two policemen requesting for liquor from the homeowners at the function had triggered the clash.

The investigation into the incident was handed over to the CID on January 22.
