Wildlife officials stated that the herd of elephants had come in search of water and fallen into a well built to provide water to a paddy field.

Whilst 2 full-grown elephants and 2 baby elephants had fallen into this well, only the 2 baby elephants were rescued after much effort.

Police officers of Omantai and officials of the Vavuniya Wildlife Office are currently conducting further investigations into the incident.
