Assault on Police Officers in Mullaitivu

A group of Police Officers who attempted to uncover an illegal drug smuggling operation in Mullaitivu were brutally attacked by an unidentified faction last night (16), leaving two Policemen injured. 

It has been reported that the attack took place at Welioya in the Janakapura region. 

The Welioya Police have reported that a group of Police operatives were deployed to a location suspected of a drug ring through intelligence received. Reports confirm that the contingent of Policemen were stoned and attacked at the instance they were attempting to arrest the leader of the suspected drug front. 

Accordingly the Police were assaulted by a group of 15 persons who are believed to be the family and close relatives of the arrested individual. 
While the attack was in progress, Special Task Force operatives were deployed to diffuse the situation and were able to arrest 4 persons that were involved in the attack. 

The two Police Officers who were injured during the conflict received treatment from the Welioya Sampath Nuwara hospital. 

The arrested suspects are to be produced before the Mullaitivu Magistrate court. Further a special contingent has been deployed to apprehend the persons involved in the attack.
