Excise officer arrested over bribery charges

An Excise Department official attached to the Aluthgama Excise Office had been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegation of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on bribery charges today (23)

The Excise officer had obtained a bribe to prevent the ban on a cannabis business carried out in Beruwala area, it is reported.

The Excise officer had allegdley requested Rs 50,000 from the entrepreneur and had been paid Rs. 20,000.The officer had been arrested when attempting to obtain the balance amounted to Rs. 30, 000, the CIABOC stated.

The suspect had been remanded until September 28 after being produced before the Kalutara Magistrate.
