A wild elephant has died after it had fallen into a canal nearby a paddy field in Ruhunuketha, Welikanda.

The elephant, aged nearly 30 years and around 8-and-a-half feet in height, had been wandering the Somawathiya National Park, according to the Giritale veterinary surgeons’ office.

The cause of death of the elephant is reportedly an intensified allergic reaction to a wound on one of its back legs.

The elephant could not be saved despite giving him necessary medical treatment on several occasions, Veterinary Surgeon Chameera Palingu Arachchi stated.

The elephant died yesterday morning (11).
