The Bribery Commission says that the principal of Deiyandara National School in Matara has been arrested while accepting a bribe of Rs 8,000.

The principal in question was arrested by officers of the Bribery Commission while soliciting the bribe from a parent to enroll their child into a Grade 6 class at the school.

He had reportedly requested for a bribe of Rs 15,000 to enroll the student and had previously accepted a portion of that sum (Rs 7,000) from the student’s parents on Sunday (10).

He was arrested today while accepting the remaining Rs 8,000 from the parents inside his office at the school, Bribery Commission officers said.

The principal is currently being detained and interrogated at the Kamburupitiya Police Station and is expected to be produced at court.

Bribery Commission officers told Ada Derana that although the student had been admitted to the school yesterday (11), his name has still not been included into the school’s registry.
